using U nails/staples to fix a crack
Hello,
Wanted to ask to those who already has used nails, 2 pins ones with a U shape, to keep a crack shut (after having the crack closed in a wet box). I have seen pictures a few old bamboos repaired this way, feels really neat and efficient, so I ordered a few from Japan, as I have a crack line on a 2.1 jiari between nagatsuke and 5th hole, where they like to appear! Being winter and lot of dry heat, it is getting worse, and as I was unsuccessful making strong enough bindings in the past, as the cracks always open again shortly after the bamboo gets dry again.
Anyone has some experience using them? I remember as an apprentice carpenter, I was told to slightly crush the end of a nail with a hammer, to prevent cracking the wood when entering into the fibers. Also, need to consider that the length of the nail (8mm, quite long) should be inferior than the thickness of the walls.
I read some time ago from Perry Yung that he don't advise using them because of some other micro cracks they create.
Any feedback from those intrepid flute makers who tried them anyways?
Bindings, I will consider that if nails are really not advised, and probably send it for that, but if I can avoid, that would keep the nice aesthetic of the bamboo, and give an Edo period touch with the silver color butterfly nails. If they were used then, why not now?

I would think about getting a proper rattan binding. Even better, just get the whole thing done up nice in rattan, if that is in the budget. This way you do not have to worry. Also, rattan looks nice, and those u-pins make the shakuhachi look like an awkward 14-year old with braces, rather than a sexy thing in rattan. Hmmm, that is starting to sound disturbing, so I will stop there. Seriously though, rattan looks good. Speak to Monty, I am sure he would be happy to help.

thank you for your post, yeah rattan could have been done in Japan, as the crack just happened before the 2.1 was sent, but prefered at the time to have a reduced price, and difficult to judge the crack not having the flute at hand. I feel the staples are less visible since the crack is in the back, than 2 or 3 rattan, so still pretend it is intact =) Anyways first concern is that it don't propagate further. So any kind of binding are considered, probably the cheaper and less invasive urushi laquered one.

Bonjour Dominique, I don't use the butterfly nails or Kusabi nails. But sometimes on the bottom section of the bamboo, where it's very thick, I might embed "U" nails. which are then hidden under bindings.
The kind of binding is a personal thing. What's important is that they are done well.

Dominique, this is a very common result of kusabi nail repairs. Over time, they cause tiny cracks around the original one.
I often dig them out, fill and then bind over.
