5-hole and 7-hole
Good day to you all,
I would like to hear some peoples opinions on 7-hole shakuhachi?
I searched the forum here but I don't seem to really find great clues on what the 'difference-maker' is between a 5-hole and a 7-hole shakuhachi.
From all the shakuhachi videos I have watched and all the music I have listened to, this is the only shakuhachi player that I know is using 7-hole: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f7s-wXZWT5o
To my ears
- but I don't have any serious musical education, I had guitar lessons for 1,5 years but that is all, I learned all music theory through the internet and several things like mixing song/bass guitar/shakuhachi/etc aswell from the internet-

Is the difference in the bending and freeability of transforming notes?
What I mean with that is: does a 7-hole shakuhachi kind of eliminate the use of traditional techniques? What I as far have read on the internet concerns around this I think.
And would it ever be worth the try?
I have been playing on a 1.8 PVC shakuhachi since october 2014 and can already play in otsu and less controlled in kan, since a while I practice daily and I'm already playing songs/melodies + I started learning shakuhachi notations.
So I'm trying to say: I'm looking to maybe buy a new shakuhachi in the near future. But nothing expensive, I already have my eye on a bamboo shak but not made of madaké so it is a lot cheaper.
I do play western music on my shakuhachi but as far I have been getting seminotes and notes outside of the Otsu scale (like B, E) through meri and doing my best with 'crazy' fingering.
I'm not looking for a change but basically like I asked at the beginning of this post: what are yours opinions?
As I probably still have a beginners mind and no teacher of course.

And I have no serious interest in the ABS shakuhachi yuu, sorry.
Anyway I will keep practicing as that is far more important then getting a more organic instrument. (ABS is still plastic though.)

now. I mainly use the two additional holes to play jazz.
When I play honkyoku or sankyoku I do not use them and play
exactely as on a five holes: It requires a bit of adaptation to keep the
two additional holes closed but it is not so complicated.
The 7 holes permit to have more "equal" sounds on all notes. It also
eases velocity. From my point of view it is very useful in jazz and useless
in the traditional repertoire which precisely emphasis on meri notes.

For exemple i transform my main 2.0 ji-nashi with to additionnal holes to play D (Db on traditionnal 7 holes) and Ab.
And i also développ 9 holes chromatic Kaval/shakuhachi.
