The simple history of shakuhachi methods
Kishi Kiyokazu貴志清一
Last time we focused on the five types of shakuhachi, gagaku-shckuhaci, tempuku, hitoyogiri shakuhachi, fuke shakuhachi and experimental 20th century shakuhachi.
Nowaday there are some methods of shakuhachi. But historially there few tmethods of shakuhachi , because of hiding the technique of this instrument. They say it "Hiden(秘伝), secret".
Nevertheless some of shakuhachi method are left today.
following,
*the oldest :[Tanteki hiden fu]短笛秘伝譜 1608A.D.
It's not the text of fuke-shakuhachi but hitoyogiri. In those day main shakuhachi was hitoyogiri shakuhachi not fuke shakuhachi.

*the oldest mothod of fuke shakuhachi is [Miyogiri syosinn syo]三節切初心書。about 1700
It's a very interesting text of fuke shakuhachi.

After this, fuke-shakuhachi became to exclude the common people. Komuso declared that shakuhachi was allowed to only Komuso and shakuhachi is the tool of meditation of Zen training, not musical instrument.
So there were few text of shakuhachi those days.

*A rare of shakuhachi music of Kinko style written by Ikeda Isshi池田一枝
about 1820.

But after Meiji restoration, some of shakuhachi method have been published.
Because Fuke-sect of Zen was abolished.

Today there are some of shakuhachi method.
And one of shakuhachi method is [Shakuhachi suisou hou]尺八吹奏法。
It was written by Kishi Kiyokazu貴志清一(me).
It include the most important tips of producing tone, so called [Kouku-zenntei rironn]口腔前庭理論。
In short, good players make air pressure at the oral vestibule(口腔前庭)
, the back of upper lip.
This method is available on website following,

I run Shakuhachi-playing-study-group(尺八吹奏研究会). I have been studying the shakuhachi and published a text book [尺八吹奏法Ⅱ]. I wish to share with pleasure of playing the shakuhachi with all of the ESS members.
