I'm a newbie here on the forum. I want to thank you for admission to this venerable forum. Only now in my mature age I discovered the wonderful world of shakuhachi. I am totally fascinated by it. Therefore I am looking for information and this forum is really a great source of knowledge for me. I only hope that my questions will not too annoying ...
I recently bought an old shakuhachi. I think it is quite old. Testifies about it the color of mature bamboo and relatively small holes. Possible dates from the Edo, maybe Meiji, I can not judge accurately. However, a mystery for me is another matter. This flute have six finger holes. On top of the flute are standard 4 hole, but on the bottom of flute are two thumb holes. I have not yet encountered anything like it. Both bottom holes look old and probably it is not any additional adjustment.
Could anyone of you advise what I actualy bought? Does anyone have any idea how to play on such shakuhachi? Thank you in advance for any advice or information.

Hallo Petr,
welcome. Two thumb holes looks strange. I am curious how this instrument can played. For the lower octave you have to close both thumb holes. Maybe the best solution is to close one thumb hole permanently. It looks like the flute starts to crack on the front holes. You might want to bind it to prevent cracking.

thank you for your feedback. Exactly how you write - two holes for thumb it is really a bit much
. But because both openings really do look like the original, I wonder how on this flute played the previous owners. Now flute does not play - among other things due to crack at the bottom. So to wrap and seal will be necessity.

It looks like very old. Two holes is strange. I have not seen like that.
It seems that this shakuhachi maker intended to imitate a chinese 笛子's sound with thin skin笛膜.
So it has two holes. Upper hole is likely for skin. It seems not standart shakuhachi.
For shakuhachi practicing, close the upper hole completely.
I hope my judgment is correct.

thank you for your insider's view, but ... I admit that I do not understand how is possible practically play this flute. How does can it work in practice?

As said, close the upper thumb hole. Use thin paper. There are Chinese flutes out there that uses this technique to achieve a certain sound. Use the term 笛子 in google for searching
