Proper care of nakatsuki?
Proper care of nakatsuki?
I acquired a two-piece Shakuhachi about 25 years ago and for almost the entire time, it was stored and not used. It seems to be in great shape (it was stored in a plastic bag inside a document tube). I'm now playing it again (finally) and would appreciate advice on proper care of the joint (nakatsuki). It hasn't been separated in 25 years. Do joints need to be regularly separated? Should I attempt to separate the joint (it seems tight but I haven't pulled with much force)? Is it okay to twist as I pull apart or ??? If I do pull it apart, is there a proper method to clean and care (lubricate?) the joint itself?
Thanks for any help.
Thanks for any help.
Multiple professional players have advised me not to pull it apart unless necessary. If you do need to pull it apart, do not twist. Rather, close one hand over the joint, then make the other hand into a fist and gently tap on the first hand while applying some light pressure to separate.
Thanks Eugene! But I'm afraid if I don't pull it apart, it may end up being stuck forever and not sure if that would be good.

If you pull it apart and damage the nakatsuke this won't be good either. Why should the nakatsuke suffer when it is kept together? As said before don't pull it unless it is realy needed.
In the 6 years i am playing there was not one occasion when i needed to pull a flute apart. But i have one or two flutes which needed the nakatuske to be tightend. Done with plumber tape
and kept together ever since.
