Bore lacquering ripples
Hi everyone,

I am at the stage of lacquering the bore of my first shakuhachi. After ji-pasting and a sukinaka layer, I applied a final coat of Shuai urushi. When dried in my Furo, the Shuai rippled a lot - I think this is due to the fact that it is very sticky and difficult to make thin. After having sanded it, I tried again with a mix of shuai + seshime + a few drops of turpentine so to have a more fluid lacquer. Applying it with the dedicated hair bross in the most thin layer possible, I obtained the same kind of ripples Sad

Any tip for what appears to me as the most delicate stage of shaku making?

Thanking you in advance!

Probably the urushi cured too fast - in too humid air too quickly. After lacquering first leave the object in normal air -as in your home- for a couple of days, and then put in a high humidity box to do final curing.

Exactly De Fouw! What I've been told. I tried again this way and it was much better. Only remains a few ripples close to the holes where urushi accumulates when we paint the bore. I took care to remove any exceeding lacquer in this area with a brush before drying, but this was not sufficient I guess.
