Aburanuki
Aburanuki
Hi...
I need some help with curing some bamboo.
I live in Portugal, and i recently found a bamboo nursery near by:)
I orded some diferent species for diferent kinds of flutes... B.alfonphe karr, P.Nigra, and P.Bambusoides...
So, my trouble is that the order comes this week and i will try to cure the bamboo for almost the firts time... ( i have already tryed with some sucess fire treat some green culms, but i didn´t left to continue the process in sun ligth )
So, my main question is after you do aburanuki, what can you do if you have no outdoor space to leave the culms standing for 2 weeks or so?
thnks,
Hugo

Hi Hugo, I've been doing aburanuki every year for the past 25 years or so, but never encountered your problem. One of the purposes of letting the culm stand in the sunlight is to expose it to ultra violet rays. Among other things, it causes the color to change from that pale-green color that is present after aburanuki to yellow-white and then a more golden yellow. If you have access to ultra violet lamps, you may be able to achieve the same or similar results. You could also try putting them in a window in your house making sure to turn them regularly. Also, when putting culms outdoors, you shouldn't leave them out at night time. So, you put them out in the morning and bring them in in the evening. None of these are hard pressed rules, but general modes of action. There is a great deal of flexibility in the aburanuki/curing process and all makers have their own tricks. Experimentation is the best guide.
Hi Jeff!!
The last time I tryied aburanuki, i left the boo outside over nigth... in the mornig, it was any longer round:(
It makes any diference to leave it with open/closed knots?
I have a small balcony, but it only catch direct sunlight in the morning... After aburanuki, in this conditions, how much time do you think is needed?
Thnks:)

Hi Hugo. The bamboo should only be cleaned of any excess dirt. You don't need to remove fushi (knots?), but you should trim the root hairs to a length that allows you to see the bamboo between the bottom few fushi. Do the aburanuki from the root and work up to above the fushi that will be the utaguchi of your instrument. I think it's okay to put the bamboo on your balcony even if the sun is direct only in the morning. Leave it there until just before the sun goes down in the evening. It should take a couple of weeks.
Dear Jeff,
The Bamboo just arrived... and the 15 P.Bambusoids is not round:( I cannot use it, right?? lol
So the B.M.Alphonse karr and Ph.Nigra came ok, i think. Does aburanuki applys to this species to?
Thank you for help:)

I've never worked with those types of bamboo before, but I would say that if there is any green color evident in the bamboo, it would be a good idea to do aburanuki. Be careful though. A thin wall means that it might be easy to overheat and burn.
