Hi from Paul Hirsh

Hi, Paul Hirsh here. I hope I can find some old and new friends on this forum. I have been playing shakuhachi for ages, hoping to get some jazz out of it, but over the years the wholetone panpipes have gradually taken over. One of the reasons the shakuhachi took a back seat for so long was the difficulty of playing in tune when switching from one instrument to another. Particularly the F in the third octave, which I used to play by opening 1 and 3 (or fingering 542, if you prefer, always counting from the lowest hole upwards, Japanese style) and bringing up my knee to cover the end. I am currently designing a clip-on key to help shade the one hole we think least about - the one at the end! Should help with RO daimeri too.
