Anyone know this Hanko?
Hi Folks,

A new acquaintance is trying to sell these shakuhachi on eBay but doesn't recall who the maker is. I believe they were purchased in the USA? This is the Hanko, since I'm not sure it's cool to post links to eBay on this forum. I believe that it reads, "Deep water", unless I am off the mark here with my translation of the Kanji. Anyone familiar with this Hanko and the maker? Thanks in advance, guys! Okay

Arrivederci, Jon

Hello Jon,
The hanko is the same as that of Shinsui Matsushita who was predominantly a tozan maker some 45 years ago. I can't find any evidence on the web of his being alive still, but the interesting thing about your hanko is that it appears relatively new. I'm wondering if it might be his predecessor's. The bamboo of your flutes also looks relatively new. Is the cord binding original? That style of binding is certainly not traditional, nor would it be one adopted by many professional makers in Japan. It leads me to wonder whether the binding was an afterthought, or the maker resides outside of Japan. Sorry I couldn't be of more help.
