Skype can be quite unerving at first.

I usually say goodbye as if parting on the street outside a cafe we just left.

I've found that to be difficult also. You usually have to lean in closer to the camera to work the mouse and it looks even more strange if you squint to see where you need to click to hang up. My solution is to just sit there smiling and let the other party disconnect.




You might need to try a different mic setup. Maybe an external mic if you are using the computer's internal one. It can be a hassle to get a mic set up, be prepared to call the product support number number for help, and that's after going through the exercise of finding the right mic. Maybe others here have suggestions for good mic setups. My logitech webcam mic works fine for me, although when I got a music keyboard to plug into my computer so I could use some music software it took lots of internet searches to find out that the webcam software changed some of the computer registry entries that was keeping the keyboard from working. After that I had to learn about how to change some registry entries to fix the problem. I'm just mentioning this to point out the kind of things to keep in mind when selecting peripherals. I think mac users have it a lot easier.



Does that mean tapping your foot to keep beat? It's very difficult to keep good time without using some kind of body motion like that.

My sense of timing is so bad, I really haven't had much progress and with learning honkyoku can get away with it; but I like to think that my timing is right; the metronome lets me know otherwise. It is so annoying.

I teach a lot on Skype now and LOVE to travel virtually around the world.
I have never found it awkward to end the conversation. I say bye and wave and cut off. Usually I do the cutting off as I do feel it is easier that way for the students.

I usually have no problems hearing. Some times there is noise on Skype. Then it often helps to call up again. Some times if it is really bad it can help if both parts log off and log in again for some reason.

I am having lessons with Bronwyn Kirkpatrick. I can meet with Bronwyn from time to time; it is probably 6 hours travel, that was the most important consideration for me; the possibility of catching up for a face to face lesson.

There are some technical difficulties and playing duets has proven most difficult; but I really like the discipline. So far a worthwhile experiment.

Yes indeed, it is great if you are able to choose a teacher you can meet from time to time. It does make a difference.
If there are no teachers in that kind of distance - Skype is sill a great option - I find.
