Hello all from a bitter cold Chicago. My name is Eric and after much delay I'm starting my shakuhachi adventure this week. I've arranged to take lessons from Michael Chiuzen Gould via Skype, and am very excited about the entire prospect. I come to the shakuhachi from the great highland bagpipes, which I've played almost my entire life. It's interesting looking at the various similarities between the bagpipes and the shakuhachi; many people struggle just to get a sound out of each instrument, and the the veterans all counsel patience and practice. Oddly enough both the bagpipe chanter and the 1.8 shakuhachi are tuned to about 440 Hz, although I don't think that they would play nice together.

Nice to see another piper come to the shakuhachi. My route was a little less direct, but I played the Great Highland Bagpipes in my early teens in Detroit and Toronto. Having a background in piping gave me an interesting approach to one technique called atari in shakuhachi playing. My tendency is to lean heavily on the muscle memory acquired from playing grace notes, grips, doublings and hits found in piping when playing some Japanese music. I largely play kinko and modern music, so my abundance of flourishes don't usually get in the way. All the best to you.
