Adjustable Flute Case / Tube

I've been using this exact case since I came across it while performing in Taiwan in 1994. It was around $4 USD

Cool, first-hand knowledge. How secure is the length adjustment when tightened? Would not want the length to compress under a stacked load in the belly of an airliner. I did end up ordering one, as well.

Although obviously multi-purpose, I believe these were originally intended for art work and can be obtained in most art supply shops at reasonable cost.

I found them under "Alvin ALTUBE". The price is about the same +/-, but one might save shipping costs if found at a local art supply.

I would go with the big Monty Levenson 4" across pvc sewer-pipe cases or one of those industrial strength aluminum-Gigantor reinforced cases from Mejiro for airline stuff. I have one of these softer archey tubes and the clear-green fluorescent tubes sold at art supply stores as well for more casual transportation needs. And, yes , you should study all the more casual tubes for their accidental opening safety measures. They can be improved with a little ingenuity.

The case is light and the plastic thin so it's great for carrying the flute on your body, which is all I need. I wouldn't use this as a check-in case when flying. There's no locking mechanism for the length adjustment and it can release if twisted unexpectedly. As Chris mentions there are better, stronger flute cases for flying if you need to check in your flutes.
