Minasan Konbanwa! So my wife and I are headed to her hometown of Maebashi in Gunma prefecture for her mother's Kanreki (60th birthday), from August 8-19...Obon time as well! Just wondering if anyone knows about shakuhachi in the area...teachers, shops, performances etc. I do know that Kakizakai sensei is in Chi-Chi bu in Saitama which is about an hour trip or so from Maebashi, and I believe Tim Hoffman is based in Gunma but not sure how to reach him, it seems his Yahoo account has expired. Any info would be most appreciated! And, in the off chance that any forum members are near the area, it'd be great to meet you!

I don't know about teachers, but a good friend of mine went to Gunma prefecture (he didn't specify city) for business, and saw several komuso. Perhaps through observance, you can pick up some tips and tricks. Hope this helps.
Thanks for the heads up Iain. Certainly good to know that there are Komuso wandering around Gunma! It can be tough when over there for such a short time and in a locale that my teacher or teacher's teacher isn't familiar with. During our last visit we had scoured the papers looking for any events or such, but to no avail...ended up seeing a flyer in a nearby mall for a shakuhachi/koto performance that had just happened the day before. Hopefully our luck will fare better this time around!

There are several shakuhachi related things happening in Gunma prefecture.
In Maebashi there is a Kinko ryū shakuhachi group based at the "Gunma Lifelong Learning Center". It is called Kinko ryū shakuhachi chikufū-kai (琴古流尺八竹風会)
I am sure you can find someone who teaches through that group.

There is also shakuhachi maker in Gunma - not in Maebashi tho. The shakuhachi making studio is: Gunma-ken, Tone-gun, MInakami-machi, Tanigawa

In fact, if you do a google search for shakuhachi and Guna-ken in Japanese more hits come up - but those are perhaps the most obvious ones.

Some time ago we did a google search in Japanese to find shakuhachi in those parts and came up with a couple interesting finds, but hadn't come across these links. We will be in Kusatsu for a few days which is right near where that maker lives. The Chikufu-kai website looks great and actually updated! They're playing at a nursing home tomorrow...they look like a very nice and welcoming group of oji-sans!
