Good book / DVD for self study
Hello all.

I have studied for a short period the basics of shakuhachi and a couple of honk you pieces. That was several years ago but I didn´t continue my studies.

Now I am thinking of starting to study again but unfortunately were I live, Norway, there are no teachers. So I will probably find a teacher who can teach me over Skype.

However, since I have some small experience of the basics, I don't want to waste time to go through it again. I think it is best if I spent some time to repeat what I have learned before I start with a teacher.

Can someone recommend some good books for beginners?

I did a small search on the forum threads but could not find any.

Der er mange forskelige bøger. Er der en bestemt stil, du er mest interesseret i?

Hei, Jeg bor i Oslo. Jeg vet ikke de forskelige stiler men jeg er interessert i Shakuhachi som meditace. Zen oriented, body-breath, awareness. Selfolgelig honkyoku men stil?

Hey, I live in (near) Oslo.
I have played for 2.5 yrs, and take lessons from Michael Chikuzen using skype.

I bought all the boks before taking up skype lessons, should I begin again, I would not buy books, but focus on skype classes. The teacher will have scores and fingering charts for you, or you find it easily on the net.

Should I buy only one book, and not take classes, I think it would be Takashi Yoshidas book. But now I take classes in Taniguchi/Yokoyama style, and I keep reading, or rather looking ( there isn'tmuch to read :-)
into Yoshinobu Taniguchis books.

I work near Oslo centralstation, let me know if you wanna meet for a chat - I have myself a background from Yoga/meditation, aikido/iaido.

Der er mange forskellige skoler med forskellige udgaver af honkyoku - derved de forskellige stilarter inden for honkyoku.
Jeg kan personlige godt lide Christopher Blasdels bog. Den nye udgave er virkelig god.
Ellers er Skype timer nok det mest effektive.
Jeg kommer også til Oslo ind i mellem og kan undervise. Smile

I also recommend Christopher Blasdel's The Shakuhachi: A Manual for Learning, the most recent edition.

The reason why I recommend this book for learning without a teacher is that the practice exercises are easy and quickly sound very nice, so you get a feeling of making something nice inbetween the struggling (BTW - prepare to struggle :- if you plan to learn withou a teacher)

Hi all. Thank you for your replies. They are very appreciated. I think I will purchase both Takashi Tokuyama and Christopher Blasdel's books for remembering the basics and then will proceed with Skype lessons. And Kiku, perhaps we could have a meeting later on, when I have refreshed my memory a bit and you happen to be in Oslo.
