shakuhachi duets?
Two shakuhachi players related to SOAS, University of London (that is Joe Browning and me) have been asked to record a shakuhachi duet...
That sounds like a wonderful thing to do, and I'd love to... but since I come from a school with no duets at all...
I'd like to ask you guys what your favourite shakuhachi duets are?

Could be fun - in fact - to make a register of guests, trios, quartets etc perhaps on the ESS website when we get it more under control...

Of the ones I have any personal experience of (Kinko), there are Kumoi Jishi, Sanya Sugagaki and Akebono Sugagaki, which are all quite melodic, harmonious and understandable as music to ears unaccustomed to honkyoku. There's a quite cool duo version of Taki-otoshi no kyoku which is more demanding of the unsuspecting public, and somewhere in between is Sagari-ha no kyoku. On the sankyoku side of things, the duo version of Chidori no kyoku is fun to play. The notation for several of these also have a trio part, played on a 2.0.

Playing together in two simultaneous parts is, in my opinion, one of the greatest kicks to be had in all of shakuhachidom. Best of luck and have fun!

Elizabeth Brown's "Loons" is a wonderful piece of shakuhachiana.
Mastery does not lay in the mastery of technique, but in penetrating the heart of the music. However, he who has not mastered the technique will not penetrate the heart of the music.

Plenty of these in Tozan repertoire.

I remember edosan, from the BBQ, sent me a copy of Sanya Sugagaki, that was a duet version. That would be nice maybe. It is a pleasant sounding piece
