Tozan - the shakuhachi's mysterious Other?
Tozan - the shakuhachi's mysterious Other?
Inspired by Lorka's post in the Museum Forum, I am hoping some insiders will tell us about Tozan ryū!
Here is a website for a start: http://www.tozanryu.com
Ok it is only in Japanese, but have a browse around...

I am not an insider by any means.. However my current teacher Bill Shozan Schultz is a Dai Shihan in Tozan ryu. I am studying some Tozan pieces with him. Indeed, Tozan is quite interesting school. First thing I had to learn is that there is a strong emphasis on music scales in Tozan Ryu. Another new thing I had to learn is that each music scale has its own set of ornaments. Therefore, if there are more than one music scale used in one piece, the player has to know which ornaments use with each one.
Of course, importance to the note sequence in each scale and correlation between shakuhachi and koto music goes without saying

Maybe I'll write a long article in The Library when I have time... (and maybe in French...)
Very quickly :
The two main branches ("ha" 派) of Tozan School are Tozan Shakuhachi Gakkai and Shin-Tozan Ryū. These two ha have been created because of a disagreement over an inheritance. The differences of style between the two ha are almost nonexistent. Scores differ slightly, those of Shin-Tozan Ryū remaining more faithful to the original while those of Tozan Shakuhachi Gakkai show almost all the ornaments and how to execute them. Diplomas are common to both ha.
There is indeed a contradiction between the desire of Tozan-ryū to open the school on all musical styles and the very traditional and secret mode of the school.
Kiku has already given the link to Tozan Shakuhachi Gakkai website.
Here is the link to Shin-Tozan Ryū headquarters in Kyōto : http://www.shintozanryu.jp/ (in Japanese)
And a link to the only official branch of Tozan-ryū outside Japan : http://www.shintozanryu-france.com/ (in French)

I belong to Tozan Shakuhachi Gakkai.
Tozan school receives a lot of influence of the European music. Therefore, it becomes that Tozan Honkyoku was considerably different from Koten Honkyoku. The modern art music using the shakuhachi often uses Koten Honkyoku music-like how to play, but cannot often express it in technic of Tozan Honkyoku.
I study Koten Honkyoku to play such a music.

Wow, Jean François, I downloaded the three pieces from your teacher and I love the feel of them.
Kangetsu is quite an epic piece... any chance of getting a hold of the sheet music from you?

A player on the websites of Tozan school is a member of Tozan school not my teacher.
My performance is not commercially available with the CD. If you want Honkyoku of Tozan school that I played, I put it in a CD and may send it.
You can buy the sheet of music on the website of Tozan school.
I play the contemporary music that evolved a tradition of the shakuhachi music. You can watch an example of my performance in you-tube if interested in such a music.

Speaking of Kangetsu, there is a fine rendition herehttp://www.windwheel.com/ksf/in-one-breath.html of Yamasaki Kozan performing the piece at the Kumamoto Shakuhachi Festival in February 2010.
