What is going on with my RI?
What is going on with my RI?
Last December I was able to get my hands on a nice selection of Madake from Japan. The first two shakuhachi that I have made both have the same issue and that is a flat RI. All other notes are nicely in tune including HI. Ri is in the neighborhood of 30-40 cents flat on both flutes. I have tried spot tuning at the half way point, but it seems to be taking a lot of additional material to get the pitch up that the tone is suffering. Any suggestions on what I might try to correct the problem or what I might do on future flutes to keep it from happening again?

Hi Michael, this is not uncommon when working with Jinashi and in fact can be heightened when making longer flutes with wider bores. It all depends upon the bore profile and your hole spacing formula.
You just have to make the adjustments for your next flutes.

30-40 cents, if it cannot be fixed with undercutting, will require the hole to be moved. You mentioned it is nice Madake from Japan. This is the main reason I tell people who come to me looking to buy root end bamboo that they should start on poles unless being guided by a teacher to make a root end. But thankfully if you don't mind the look moving the hole is not a big deal. Spot-tuning in the bore is done to adjust how notes respond mostly so that they can be pushed to achieve a big full sound or to balance them out between otsu and kan. Good luck! flutedojo.com
