Practicing. Moving my shakuhachi about.
When I practice during the day I'm in my unheated room. I'm still not sure just how much moving about from place to place or outside I can do, given that the shakuhachi is sensitive to such changes. How resilient are they on a day to day basis?

The reason for my concern is that while my practice room, during the winter, is at least 10/15 degrees C above the outside temperature, it is about 15 degrees c below the temperature of the living areas. So I decided to stay put in my practice room rather than practice elsewhere. Outside on a sunny, cold day would be good, and so would the living areas of the house, but I thought that the sudden differences might not be a good idea?

I don't think you really have to worry about playing the flute in different climates. Especially in your home. However, in extreme situations such as bringing your flute from the winter cold into a heated apartment (which I've been doing for the last 6 months here in NYC!), you may want to let the flute acclimate before playing. I've never had a problem.
Every piece of bamboo is different depending upon how old it was when harvested and the conditions in which it was cured. I think the important thing to be aware of is proper storage. Try not to leave your flute exposed in a dry climate or direct sunlight.
