OK tone or great tone

I don't understand the question. What is "personal playing"? Does that mean playing alone, not for an audience? For me the feel of the flute is probably more important than tone or volume, that's not a choice.

That's what I meant by personal playing. Playing for yourself only. Can you describe what you mean when you say "feel"? I'm curious as I believe I know what you mean but would like to hear what "feel" means to you.

[EDIT] In any case I would say for this question that both shakuhachi would feel great for their type, the quiet one would have a great feel for you as well as the loud one.

Definitely I would opt for the more difficult to play but great tone instrument because it is likely that if I spent time with the instrument I would learn how to generate the good tone and the flute would probably actually feel easier to play as I became familiar with its unique characteristics. As for loud shakuhachi, I don't gravitate toward loud whether playing on my own or with others.

not sure if it answers the question but i noticed that student wood shakuhachi's are a lot easier to play usually then a real jiari, but the sound of them somehow lackluster...

Fortunately, I have several wives.
One is a 'workhorse', she digs the garden, chops wood, paints the weatherboards and scrubs the shower.

The fourth has a doctorate in Astro-Physics, reads voraciously and has an electron microscope
The fifth keeps the children fed and watered, makes sure their hair is tidy and homework is up to date.
